A journal of a 5-month trip to Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
In The Beginning ...
... there were healthy feet. This blog will track my journey to Africa, Australia and New Zealand - the fulfillment of a childhood dream of climbing Kilimanjaro, and the experience of a dream adventure: making safari and exploring a bit of our world.
Smaller than their southern African cousin, possibly the most common animal on the Mara.
Hyena
Despised by the native people, as they are considered dirty. Worse than vultures. They eat anything and every part of what they scavenge or kill, including bones and teeth. Their scat is white.
Or, is Thompson's gazelle the most common?
Do I remember correctly that a friend of mine described these animals as the "fast food" of the plains? Get it- "fast" food?
The grand gazelle
Plentiful, but not really common.
Topi
Note the blue patch on each hind leg.
Giraffe
Giraffe are the only animal on the Mara that can see color. Why?
One of Africa's "Big Five"
Lion, rhino, elephant, leopard, and cape buffalo.
Third of the Big Five.
Again within 30 feet, but this time from within the vehicle.
African Sunset
The Maasai are burning the grass to encourage new growth for their beloved cattle.
